My experience with Linux (Review of Linux Mint 7.0)
By Herman Jusuf
My experience with Linux (Review of Linux Mint) I really would like to love LINUX. I have been trying for many years. The last time I tried was probably when there was still Caldera LINUX. The best I tried was SuSe 6.0. I really loved it. However, LINUX, at that time, was really 'not ready for desktop'. At least, it wasn't ready for me. I liked to listen to radio, many internet radio sites were not compatible and most of messengers were not available for LINUX (MSN Messenger, ICQ, and Yahoo messenger were what I used the most). Also, it was almost impossible to watch any online video or online TV because of , again, MS codecs compatibility. However, plenty of things have changed. Some of these are thanks to flash. Flash makes it 'codecs agnostic' or 'browser-independent' to watch online videos or internet radio. Then, I tried plenty of distros. The one that suits me the most is LINUX MINT. I ran it on a USB flash drive with 'persistent storage' (which means you can save your files even if after you reboot the system). Again, despite plenty of things I like, LINUX MINT 7 disappointed me. I believe it is not the distro's problems, yet, it is LINUX problem. Many of LINUX programs are STILL feeling so 'half-baked' compared to Windows (I never have Mac). Here is some of the problems I had: 1. I downloaded my resume from my email. I tried to open my Word 6.0 document with OpenOffice 3.0. Alas, it crashed on me! The worst thing is that makes my OpenOffice completely unusable, no matter what I tried! I tried uninstalling my Openoffice, I tried to remove my document, I even tried to remove the files manually, I still couldn't open it. Last thing I tried was to go to OpenOffice website. I downloaded their latest 3.1 beta. When I opened it, there are many of .deb files! I didn't know where to start to install! To make a long story short, I somehow managed to make this thing installed and loaded fine. Oh, actually, before I downloaded this OpenOffice, I tried Softmaker 2008 for LINUX. It was really really a nice program. However, it was only 30 days trial. So, it didn't really solve my problem. 2. My next problem was Totem multimedia. For some reason, I couldn't play some of the online videos anymore. I knew that it was running before today. However, this was solved quite quickly. I was lucky because Totem had a quick update from the software repositories that is built in LINUX MINT. 3. My last problem is that all of sudden, all my browsers have problems! I installed many browsers. There are Firefox (which is built-in), Opera 9, Midori, Seamonkey 1.1.7 ( I think that is what was in the repositories). My Opera just refused to accept any text I typed after a while! Then, all the other browsers just won't accept my cut and paste! I just finally couldn't find how to solve this problem. These are some of the problems I have encountered recently.I am not a newbie and I have some quite good knowledge of LINUX and Windows. I still somehow see that LINUX STILL has the same problems that it had had since the first time I tried. First is how all the software feel so 'half-baked'. Even if it is one of the cross-platforms software, somehow, the one in LINUX feels like 'second class' (For example FLASH and Skype) The second thing is it is still very difficult to install LINUX programs , in general. I still have a high hope for LINUX. Thanks to the 'cloud computing' , it seems to help the advancement of LINUX a little bit. |
